I ended up buying a couple from the local Homebase shed. Apache and jalapeño which may get left in the greenhouse as we had an offer on the house yesterday!

So these guys are coming along nicely.

            upload_2019-4-17_11-5-24.jpeg

The ones along the back wall still have the bite marks from our cat's fangs, but most of them seem to have recovered.

I think there's still a chance of frost - coldest day this month so far was -0.9°C at 06:19 AM on the 14th of April. So I guess that as you all say, they're not going outside until May.

Do you have some kit that does that meterological reading or is it by hand?

No, we have a weather station out in the garden, connected to a Linux RHEL virtual machine on a server inside.

I love it. Installed it in January of 2018 and can check any month since then to see what's been happening weather-wise. Like July last year, when we had the heatwave..

                  upload_2019-4-17_16-16-23.png

Or the graphs for the past year, from April 2018 to April of this year...

My wife thinks it's a waste of time 'since we have the BBC', but I don't regret buying it.

@joh98.mac It might be useful to insert some additional columns for comparison with (BBC?) forecast temps.

I use 2 USB temperature data loggers (as in link below) and download data into Excel spreadsheets, enabling me to not only record much better information than simply using a max/min thermometer, but to continuously compare temps between heated greenhouse floor/low staging/high staging or low level/high levels in polytunnels, or inside/outside fleece/cloches/polytunnel/etc.

Lux data loggers also available for comparison of light levels. I use the temp ones from here, but cheaper ones may be available Dataloggers – Mindsets Online

                    An example

                    temps 31-01.4.2016.JPG

Perhaps not a good example to use (a greenhouse with a thermostatically controlled heater), but the first I found. Temps inside/out comparisons with polytunnels can get very interesting when compared to simple max/min thermometers placed inside/out.

I like this idea, but I need to find out whether I could link it to my existing station. :-)

It all seems a good idea and I used to keep records. Nowadays I just walk into the greenhouse, see what I think of the temperature and decide whether to open the door, windows, propagator. The plants seem to think it's OK that way :dbgrtmb:.

Over the 43 years we've had the greenhouse I've experimented with different things but with not having to go to work I find it easier to just go out and check. :)

I've tried different versions of a lid for the propagator but have come down to a very Heath Robinson version this last week. I replaced the cover with a contraption of wires, canes and plastic - not forgetting some clothes pegs. :heehee:

I've found through experimentation over the years that allowing too much bright light onto the plants doesn't help and unless we use greenhouse shading they can get frazzled. so I've used a slightly opaque 'clear' plastic. Held it up with cloche hoops and short canes and when I want to open it I just lift the plastic and peg it to some overhead canes and wire.

It took me about six seconds to peg it up this morning (after I demisted my glasses from the condensation and mist that billowed out).

                        Pegged up
                        P1410906.JPG

36 chilli plants in 3 litre pots and a variety of others- plus seedlings to be potted on and moved into the greenhouse
                        P1410907.JPG

The clear space in the top right hand corner is for Sarafi the cat (not ours but he's the current boss of our place!).

You can see his personal entrance in this next picture
                        P1410908.JPG

The chillies are extremely happy in their home and are starting to flower.

We have about a hundred more that will need potting on and moving into the greenhouse. Once these are flowering well they can gradually be hardened off and moved onto the benches near the propagator. The plastic has been deliberately made large enough to be extended over the bench alongside and give warmth and protection on cold nights.

Very basic - but it works superbly. :dbgrtmb:

I've got 12 plants that I've over wintered in the conservatory, 4 of each Caralina Reaper, Ghost Chilli (Bhut jolokia)and Trinidad moruga Scorpion yellow. Got 3 plants 1 of each coming at the end of May.

I've found that growing Chillies under bright growlights produces much better plants than relying on natural light. My Chillies haven't seen natural light since sowing in early March, later than I usually sow, which explains why they're so small.
