@shiney , amazing information and detail, thank you :blue thumb:
I've used litter trays myself in the past, they are great, nice and sturdy for moving about.
Mine live on a south facing kitchen window, no heating though, ( apart from cooking ) maybe that's the difference :dunno: The only two other south facing windows with ledges wide enough are in my 20 yr old and 17 yr old son's bedrooms..... :yikes:...... I'd rather make do, frankly :rolleyespink: :love30:
My jalapeño are now in their new detached abodes and are looking good :dbgrtmb:
Thanks for the information shiney. I appreciate it:spinning:

When you start seeds off on kitchen roll, how deep do you plant them in soil, once they’ve spouted?

The same depth you would with any seedling. It depends on how tall they have grown when you plant them but about one third of their stem deep if they're still small and flimsy - which they usually are.

Jalapeno have germinated in 6 days so my worry over viability was unfounded. Plenty more to sow in a few weeks time

Tempted to try jalapeños this year. I’m usually rubbish at gpwing chillies....last year I got a corker chilli plant from shineyland-produced way more than we needed. This year I’m going to make chilli oil-good for stirfry.

If you're coming this year (I certainly hope so :)) I can put one aside for you - although there should be plenty for all.

I grow a medium hot cayenne chilli . I wanted a mild chilli for grilling on BBQs adding to salads etc . Jalapeno I thought . Searching for seeds on Ebay the Jalapeno seeds were described as hot or very hot  I found this Tam Jalapeno , which is described as mild . Sowed them last week so they should be showing in the next couple of days.:blue thumb:

Ive just opened my pickled jalapeno and can confirm that they are hot enough :yikes:.

I'm growing Big Jim this year as they are meant to be much milder and can be stuffed and cooked.

@andrews , just had a look at Big Jim chillies . They do grow big 30cm !
I did grow Hungarian hot wax a few years back . They are a nice large mildish chilli , perfect for stuffing .

I find jalapeño quite mild/ medium when fresh but my pickled ones definitely have a kick. I do add a couple of habanero to the jars though :heehee:

And so I'm back for my yearly 'why can't I grow chilis no matter how often and how hard I try?' post.

About a fornight ago, I planted a variety of seeds. About a week later, I got some activity. When the seedlings got to about two inches high, I have taken two of the pots out and placed them onto the window sill. Alarmingly, I have noticed that already (and I say 'already' as I took them from the propagator about an hour ago) one of them looks a bit 'scorched'. The middle one in this photo.......

                          Imgur

They were in a brightly lit spot near to a window, but at no time were they touched by direct sunlight. I kept the earth moist, but not overly so, and was careful not to let it dry out.

I am starting to get that sinking feeling in my stomach (coupled with a not inconsiderable degree of downright frustrated rage), because this is what happened last year, and I had to sit and watch about fifty seedlings wither and die, one after the other. I do not know what I have done wrong, and I do not know how to stop it getting any worse.

                          Please help.

                            Hello John
Picture of my Cayenne from a few years back . Yours appear a lot leggier than mine.
Only thing I do is use good quality seed compost in a small prop tray. Keep them as warm as possible until they germinate . Then they need as much light as possible and warmth to bring them on . A cold spare room is not OK .
Not to late to try another batch from Ebay , what type are you growing ?
