Mrs. Shiney knew I was not keen on spicy and kindly steered me toward the milder dishes. I might have been a bit more adventurous though if I hadn't been over 3,000 miles from home. I'm just an old coward!

It's Brugmansia sanguinea, all parts are extremely poisonous so not one to get mixed up with a chilli :)

The taller ones are Chilli Tabasco, they are only just flowering, sown on 5th January and brought on under grow lamps initially. The shorter ones are a Sweet Pepper 'Etiuda' also sown on 5th Jan.

Thank you ( well at least i suspected it wasn't a chilli so I've learnt something after all!!) -- I didn't sow any of mine till mid Feb so I suppose I am behind you by several weeks.

          So......

On Friday night I was watching an episode of Gardeners World from a few weeks ago. There was a feature on a specialist chilli grower.
Now in my 35 + years of gardening and specialist plant collections (cacti, ferns etc), I have never grown vegetables
I do like spicy food though.

Don't know what it was, but something tempted me to try and grow some Chillies

On Sat morning, I went past 2 garden centres. And bought 4 plants at one (smallish)
And another 3 plants at another (a bit bigger)
At home I potted them all into slightly bigger pots. And put them in my greenhouse.

I can see this becoming an obsession :yikes:

I think there is Apache and Prairie Fire

Not sure of the rest. I will make a note this evening.

Yes, @Sirius it does become a bit of an obsession. I started growing them years ago because someone challenged me. Well, I jutted out my chin and charged in. I believe this year is my 20th anniversary of growing them. :)

Flowers and other ornamentals are all lovely but sometimes I want something edible in return for my efforts!

I like the exotic look of some chillies they make an interesting contrast to tomatoes and cucumbers in the greenhouse. One plant provides enough chillies for us for a year, but I grow more to give away. I grow a lot more sweet peppers.

I'm growing Apache as well ( from seed) -- had wanted to try prairie fire but was too disorganised to get the seeds in time. Of the types I'm doing ( which I won't re-list from an earlier message on this thread) -- this seems to have flowered fastest and is a compact/tidy variety no more than 30 cm tall for me in 1 or 2 litre pots). I'll report back once a chilli has managed to grow enough to harvest!

                    I have:

                    Apache (x2)
                    Prairie Fire
                    Cayenne
                    Hot Banana
                    Habanero Magnum (Orange)
                    Trinidad Perfume

I will see how I get on with them this summer. And next year may try some more varieties.

I'm growing Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Scorpion, Komono dragon and Armagedon. Also a sweet pepper that I saved seed from a bought one.
I grow them in the conservatory, but when it gets hot they start to droop a bit, but recover in the late evening.i thought that like it like that. I always make sure that they have enough water.

Well my first pollination attempt was a dud ( hand pollinated a few flowers but obviously not well enough as stalks just fell off vs making chillies )... so have just moved them outside for the next week or two while its warm and hope the insects know what to do better than I did!

@Lovechillies just make sure the air is stirred regularly. That is what I do. Little fans. I drank the koolaid about hand pollinating but honestly, chillies aren't fussy. A puff of air moving will work. I have lots pf cross breeds because there's no telling what they all get up to with a little encouragement :)

I tend to think, that unless you are a professional, actually creating hybrids is not easy.
I think I'm right in saying chillies, along with the others in the family are self fertile, so unless you remove the Male parts of the seed flowers before they ripen the flower will just pollenate itself.
Has Lori says just some movement will distribute the pollen, a cause the flowers to pollenate.
A tap of the flower stalks around midday usually works.
