There are ready cooked chips, there are oven chips but nothing compares to home deep fried fresh chips made from real potatoes (preferably Cara but other varieties are available).

You can use oven chips in a fryer, they're just frozen real potato chips with a bit of oil on them.
      I couldn't be trusted with a chip fryer.

I like the deeply philosophic tone of this thread

If you have few eaters and spare cupboard space, airfryer is The Thing for a crunch lover. Thinking beyond chips, celeriac, carrot, beetroot and any root veg works a treat when parboiled, mixed with some spiced oil and airfried until just right. The Daleks are not even expensive, some £40 buys a decent one. Recommended! Mine is this cheapy one, perfect for a household of two.

On a vaguely related matter, I have a weakness for the most industrial, additive (palm oil being the most human friendly of the lot I'm afraid) laden things- curly fries. I hadn't bought them for years but got a sudden craving and added them into my Tesco delivery order. All week we were talking about the things, fearing an out-of-stock situation and when the delivery arrived with the Sacred Curlies, we spontaneously cried in unison "CURLY FRIES!".

The driver, waiting by the front door, looked rather amused.

+1 for the Actifry, here. But only using proper, home-grown, not-water-saturated potatoes. One spoonful of oil (walnut for preference :wub2:) and 25 minutes later, crispy, guilt-free frîtes. And just for once, it's a gadget that doesn't require a SWAT team and 3 hours to clean it afterwards!

Often thought about one of those fryers that dont use any oil.
How do they work and are the resulting chips like oven chip?

I have an actifry. I use it for frozen chips and fresh. Frozen you use zero added oil, fresh, you add a tablespoon. It has a rotating paddle that keeps flipping the chips (or coated chicken strips, nuggets or whatever) and they come out piping hot and crisp. I also bought the wire shelf which can replace the paddle for doing larger items like potato patties or chicken burgers without bending them.

Had mine about 4 years and would never go back to a deep fryer.

OK, no oil, so do they come out dry like oven chips?
After a couple of oven chips my mouth runs out of saliva and I cant swallow any more.

Mccains only take 5 or 6 mins in deep oil, but that is once its up to temperature.

I don't think they seem dry but then again, I'm careful not to overcook them. Anything would dry up if left too long as it is hot dry air cooking. If you want them a bit oilier, you can always add a tablespoon of oil.

I can't remember the name of their competition's unit but I've seen it demonstrated and it is much quieter and a bigger price tag.

The other advantage of the Actifry is there's a model with a tray which fits over the chip bit, so you can cook meat, fish or chicken at the same time as your chips.
