Ordered a clematis and have it in a large pot in a se spot.
The plant had been clipped and tied to a small stake with one main stem left free. I added a tall stick when I planted it and loosely tied the remain stem to it while I ordered a frame online.

That one stem keeps growing I think there is a flower on top but just more leaves. I installed the frame today around the plant and cut the stem at the top of the post.

My thinking was that I want the rest of it to grow.
    Have I killed it :) ?

You haven't killed it by cutting the top off, it will probably grow some side shoots now, but Clematis usually grow many feet so it will not stay within your frame.

These are my Clematis in tubs. That was their first year.

The one on the left is about a metre taller this year. The one over the fence is a bonny one.

Hello Geoff68, welcome to GC! The usual advice given on planting a Clematis is to chop it down to about 30cm/1'. That's to encourage it to make lots of stems. If you've got a few already, chopping the main stem will just divert the energy into the others, and as Michael says, encourage it to make sideshoots. Clematis are greedy plants, so keep an eye on watering and if it hasn't got any slow-release fertiliser in the compost, give it a liquid feed once a month. You should get flowers before the autumn, depending on the variety.

Thanks for the welcome ! My other half doesn’t have any faith in the ‘Clematis in a pot’ idea. Though she has watered it! Thanks for the advice.

Can you suggest a patio clematis suitable for a pot 2ft deep and 1ft across please?

You probably need to go to a specialist clematis grower like this one, see also their growing guides.
              Boulevard® (compact patio)

Expect there are other places offering such small plants or you might be very lucky and find one in a local garden center, though no something we have looked out for.

Hi @Auricula I can only go off what I have which are 2 clematis 'So Many' in individual pots. Both pots around the size you mentioned above. They are group 2 I think. When I potted them I put lots of organic matter and some slow release fertiliser in there too. I have 2 water at least twice per week but they seem happy. They are in full sun so under planted with Calofornian Poppies to shade the roots.

Interesting variety, seems 'So Many' is a group of them , so far seen mention of your Blue and a Red , though only been able to see the Red for sale in the UK.

Can we ask where you got your Blue from and if you know of any other colour in this group ?

                    Hi @ricky101
Yes of course. I bought them both from Costco a couple of years ago. Sadly I don't know much about them but I do have the label somewhere so I'll have a look and let you know.

I would be happy to collect some seeds for you off both the blue and purple when they are ready.
Not sure if it would work as I've never grown them from seed.

                          Hi @Jasmine star,

Many thanks for the kind offer of seeds.

Believe they are not too difficult to grow from seed, think you will need a couple of years before they make decent size plants and with seeds you cannot be sure exactly what colour they will grow as.

Think you were lucky to get such good looking plants from a Costco in store offer, but we will keep our eyes open for them in our local shops and garden centers.

We have a lovely Blue one, Jackmanii, but its a very vigorous plant, too much so for the place we want it and a smaller plant like the So Many ones would be better.

Edit - have you considered trying to take cuttings, they will of course come true to colour .. now would be a good time to try ..

                          How to take clematis cuttings
