This is not at all new! SARS started in another country too and was brought to Canada some 10 years ago and I don't think this was the only country where this happened.

@Mike Allen I was referring to facial features that suggest genetic roots in China. No prejudice, just observance and I believe it could stem from the fact that so many were visiting home for the Chinese new year and they are afraid of their own countrymen perhaps bringing back the bug with them. Regardless, this is what I've seen with my own eyes and am trying to understand. If anything, it frightens me to see someone wearing a mask outside of a cancer ward or operating room :hate-shocked:

We went to IKEA today, the Teenager still having some occasional cough after her bout of a perfectly ordinary flu over a week ago.

"Cough cough cough" (in a loud voice)" Oh Darling, that cough of yours is not getting any better. Perhaps that trip to China wasn't a good idea after all" And the hoards of slow walking people divided like the Red Sea to let us pass. :heehee:

Some towns in the north of Italy, in the Lombardy and Veneto regions, have shut down because of the virus. They have about 70 cases with two deaths

This virus seems to be somewhat "fair" in a sense that even though it infects everybody, the main group of fatalities is amongst the very old or infirm. The Influenzas were cruel in a way that they harvested the young ones who didn't have any immunity of the previous waves.

Every life is precious but it does feel more justified to have the deaths on the higher end of the ages rather than the younger. Having just said that, I do have mixed feelings about this.

The nurses and doctors are the true heroes. I can't imagine what they are going through especially in China, day after day, week after week, month after month.

Unless you're in the higher end! :old:

“you cannot have that only the elderly and the very young will die, it is part of the natural history of such infections that we will get deaths across the age ranges … The same pathophysiology can happen in the young as in the old.”

“It is not surprising that fellow clinical colleagues have got infected and some have died,”

Hi @Selleri , can I just say that to say it only kills the very old and/or the infirm is fair is a very inhumane and disgusting thing to say. How would you feel if it were your parents or grandparents who died ? Would it feel more justified then ?

I am sure Selleri never meant any disrespect or whatever by his comment. It's unfortunate that probably each and everyone of us, at times says something and it comes out the wrong or is momentarily misunderstood by another.

Lets hope and pray that this worldwide situation soon comes to an end and the minimum amout of lives are lost. That our thoughts and prayers can go out to comfort in some way, all such sad losses of life.

Absolutely no disrespect meant, @KFF ! I'm getting into the age myself where I realise I have done most of my bits in this world and the young ones are stepping in. So if the virus, or anything else can choose between me and my 5 year old niece... I believe it would be somehow more "fair" if she had the green card.

What a horrible thing to think, or to say out aloud. It's one of these old moral dilemmas "whom would you rescue from a burning house" without right or wrong answers.

Apologies for any offence, I didn't mean to cause negative feelings.

Sadly, these dilemmas and questions do arise and it is only when you try to think through them logically that the answers sound horrible. A few years ago, I took part in a program of tests, the results of which were being used to design AI for self driving cars. As the driver, I was presented with various on road scenarios and then my reactions/judgement to those scenarios were used for the results.

Some of them were similar to the dilemma here - eg an elderly person stepping out right in front of your vehicle, but if you take evasive action one way you hit a child, another way a pregnant mother and so on. As drivers, we take these sort of decisions when presented in microseconds and can hopefully avoid all three - - gut reaction as to the best thing to do based on years of experience even. A computer is a lot more blunt than that. It works faster for sure, so it will have ran through all of those scenarios in a millionth or a billionth of a second, but for it to work it needs to know the 'right' answer.

Trouble is, none of them are, especially when it simply cannot miss one or the other.
