        It was because the scientists originally thought that the vaccine would block infection - unfortunately it is only 50% effective at stopping someone getting infected and they could then without knowing pass it on.

        The vaccines are 95% effective at stopping people from dying - really, that's the only % that matters.

          Yeah, but think about it, how long did it take to wipe out the likes of smallpox, even polio.

          We still get outbreaks of measles I believe, totally eradicating a virus from the planet is a long and rarely successful thing.

            AFAIC, the scientists have never claimed the virus can be eradicated, indeed it was always accepted that the virus will always be with us. No massive plan.

              So what have places like New Zealand etc. Been up to.
              What I probably should have said is I don't remember last year being told that we are all going to get it at some point,, after the news footage we were bombarded with a statement like that would have caused mass panic amongst certain sections of the public.

                  They've always wanted herd immunity but it doesn't last for long, but there's long Covid and younger people are getting it, we should have kept wearing the masks in places.

                  Even with the vaccines I don't think that it will make any difference, we're all doomed.

                    Yes because parents aren't getting their children vaccinated.

                      Just been to Morrisons, all the stickers have gone off the floor, looks like the staff don't have to wear masks anymore as only about half of them were and lots of customers not wearing them either.

                      I didn't notice if the sign was still outside as regards wearing masks.

                        That's been for a few weeks now. Sainsbury's have a sign outside saying that wear mask if you can but some don't, we give those a wide birth, also can still clean the trolley and hand gell. I think Morrisons have that outside but well away from the door. Tesco is the same as Sainsbury's.

                          I guess now we have been told we are all going to catch it any way wearing masks does seem to be a bit pointless. :dunno:

                            Things I picked up from t-net:

                            - long covid is not as bad as the medical bods thought that it would be;

                            - 40% - 50% of children have already had covid - they won't be getting jabbed unless they are considered 'vulnerable'.

                            - the % of children getting covid will increase with schools going back - increasing natural immunity further;

                            - medical professionals are not concerned about the health of children who get covid.

                            I think that masks etc. should be a personal choice - I still wear a mask in shops - including those in England - because, for me, it makes sense - I feel safer - it's not a big effort to sling on a mask.

                            I will stop doing it when my Mum has had her booster jab.

                              The mask doesn't protect the person who's wearing it, it's the other people that person comes into contact. Unless they wear a visor.
