Yes Garnet is good.....an old reliable variety.
Check out Sour Grapes too. However, Czar is a stunner Gary. A taller plant. Wonderful flowers. White and purple. :) The penstemons are evergreen so look good all year round plus easy from cuttings. They root quickly and make flowering plants the following summer.....cant lose :yay:

I've checked and a local garden centre stocks garnet. I'm hoping to keep the colours simple: White, yellow and red. Maybe a splash of orange. All depends on what I can fit in. I'll check out czar later. :blue thumb:

Hi Jack, this is the one I was thinking of for you ........

Gladiolus Communis var. Byzantus ( often sold as Gladiolus Byzantus ), totally hardy and makes little clumps.

I grow Garnet as it is about the hardiest Penstemon you can grow which is important from the point of view of where I live (in Scotland) It's not nearly as showy as Lucifer or as tall. If you wanted to grow a showy penstemon of similar colour to Lucifer then something like King George. This penstemon isn't as hardy as Garnet but might be ok where you live.
