Yes Garnet is good.....an old reliable variety.
Check out Sour Grapes too. However, Czar is a stunner Gary. A taller plant. Wonderful flowers. White and purple. The penstemons are evergreen so look good all year round plus easy from cuttings. They root quickly and make flowering plants the following summer.....cant lose

 

I've checked and a local garden centre stocks garnet. I'm hoping to keep the colours simple: White, yellow and red. Maybe a splash of orange. All depends on what I can fit in. I'll check out czar later.

Gladiolus Communis var. Byzantus ( often sold as Gladiolus Byzantus ), totally hardy and makes little clumps.

 

I grow Garnet as it is about the hardiest Penstemon you can grow which is important from the point of view of where I live (in Scotland) It's not nearly as showy as Lucifer or as tall. If you wanted to grow a showy penstemon of similar colour to Lucifer then something like King George. This penstemon isn't as hardy as Garnet but might be ok where you live.
