    Good idea!
I save the empty jars from herbs and spices for rooting cuttings in water. Plenty of room for a handful of cuttings in one of those, and they don't take up a lot of space.

Whilst we're on the subject of jam jars, cling film over the top, sharpened pencil to make a few holes, cuttings go through the holes into the water. Less evaporation and less chance for leaves and debris to contaminate the water.
I'm quite sure everyone does this, don't they?:)

Anyone know if buddleia cuttings root in water?
if they do I'd like to try it with my buddleia globosa.

It's on the list on page 1 @LeadFarmer but you shouldn't prune till after flowering as they are not the same as the davidiis which get pruned hard in late winter/early spring and flower on new wood.

Hello @earlydaze. I have successfully rooted Sarcococca hookeriana cuttings in water.
p.s. having read through others comments I should say I use a pint glass!

Yes they root easily in water. I've grown both Buddleja Davidii and Globosa from cuttings.

Tomato cuttings must be pretty easy in water, I mean a lot of solanaceae will get going super easy, so why not toms?
I'll give it a go if I remember

Has anyone tried Clematis cuttings in water? I have a very vigorous well established Julia Correvan but so far have failed to get any viable cuttings from her using cuttings in soil, I read the advice and think I’m following it. She is incredibly healthy so it must be me :what::what:

I've never succeeded with Clematis cuttings in any way whatsoever  I find layering to be the best method :)

@Butterfly6, I have never tried clematis cuttings in water but I have had a lot of success with them otherwise. They need to be internodal cuttings for best results but as @noisette47 mentions, layering is a good method too.

Thanks for replies. I’ve tried intermodal and probably every variation on, but will try again. Will also try layering as I haven’t given that a go. @noisette47 do you layer them on the ground or into a pot and how long does it usually take?

My mum could get clematis cuttings to root by just asking them too, or so it seemed @Ladybird4, maybe you are the same x

@Butterfly6, all my family are convinced that I am the green-fingered 'one'. My Dad, taught me all I know today and I loved gardening with him when I was young. He was the vegetable grower and I did the flowers and shrubs.

Definitely into the ground. I think that the trickiest part of propagating anything is getting the moisture level right, so it's a lot less hassle in-ground. All told it takes a year. Although they root quite quickly, I leave them to make sure that the root system is a decent size before moving or potting up.

Funny that, never could get them growing from layers, but I can smile sweetly at them in July and August and take 'T' cuttings no problems!
