I've moved this thread over from the Canna's thread

You mean more colours, or more plants of what you have?

They are easy to raise from cuttings in the Spring. I reckon I get 5, sometimes more, from each nice fat tuber I save overwinter.

I should have enough to spare some cuttings for you next spring if you like? Perhaps we should have a Dahlia Cuttings Swap Thread for next Spring?

    I have these:

I'm liking dahlias more and more - hadn't even given them a second glance until this year either.

I don't think I'll have much that is interesting Kristen, but if I do end up with something you would like a cutting of, I would be more than happy to send some on:)

Thanks. Reds and Whites (not on my Want's list) is what I'm after. The ones on my Wants List happen to be from the Planting List for the Red / "Hot" Border at Hidcote, so I assume they are sufficiently "special" to have warranted that, so I'm just nicking their plant list ... but in reality any Reds would probably do :)

Haven't found a posh Planting List for a white border yet, so am not so snobbish :heehee: about White varieties

Apart from the XL's and the ones that I have in the garden at the moment that I am going to try and nick tubers from, the rest of mine next year will hopefully be 'Bishops Children' (assuming the seeds come good for me); remind me next year, and I will happily send you photos of the ones I have, and if there are any you want I can arrange to get them to you.

On a scale of 1-to-10 they are easy.

Lift the tubers in the Autumn and store over winter (I store them in spend multi purpose from other projects). I dampen the compost occasionally, but it depends what temperature you keep them at.

In the early Spring give them some heat so they start to sprout. When the shoots are about 6 inches long (at least 4 leaf nodes) I cut them just above the bottom leaf node (so that it shoots, and I get two more from that one later), and then cut the cutting immediately below the leaf node (so that would be the second leaf node up from the tuber, you've left the bottom leaf node on the parent) and treat it like any other cutting. I stick a plastic bag over it and put it on a windowsill in the house so it has some warmth (as my conservatory is unheated and probably a bit cold at night to get cuttings to root).

Some people cut the shoot off at the tuber, sometimes including a sliver of tuber, but I think that reduces the next "crop" of shoots for more cuttings, hence I take them just above a leaf node so that the buds that are left break, and provide more cuttings (or a branched plant to plant out if it becomes to late to take more cuttings)

Grow on and possibly plant out a bit later than the tubers themselves, depending on how quickly they grow. The first round of cuttings I take are usually large enough to plant out with the tubers, but the later batches may get planted out quite a bit later, once they have made decent sized plants.

This site is fairly handy: http://www.jrg-dahlias.co.uk/new_page_3.htm

                    Kristen,

Is Zorro the giant red one?
I could have a spare tuber, but I need to check.

I grow dahlias too, like twynings after eight, bishop, and a wonderful variety called Honka. This is a simple, splayed finger type unlike most other, dahlias. It's charm is in its simplicity. It's butter yellow. ,I grow blue salvias nearby and a blue grass to its other side. I live not far from the national dahlia collection held in Cornwall.
