Due to the amazing amount of snow we had in November and December I have quite a fair bit of damage to my garden with many broken branches of trees and indeed some trees actually completely collapsed!

I have noticed that I have some branches on the above shrub which have split but not completely broken away from the main stem. Does anyone have experience of trying to "mend" branches on this shrub? Ie if I tied the branches back to the main stem to give a tight join, do you think the branches would knit back or would I be better to "cut my losses" and remove the branches completely? If I remove the branches I will have some fairly hefty damage to the main stem of the shrub, is it likely that the damage will heal or will it be likely the shrub will be open to infection? The shrub currently is about 5ft high. If I cut it back to below where there is damage I'll have about 2 ins left!!!! Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Not tried with this shrub, but have with others. I bound the split branch together making sure that the cambium layers of both pieces came into contact. I actually used strong Sellotape, but any clear plastic material would do. I takes awhile for the union to form so the binding has to be able to last a while. After all this is what grafting is.
