One time wife and I sat down to eat at a restaurant in Minorca. It was in the days when the going rate was about €5 for a starter (max), about €8-10 for a main and about €10 (max) for a bottle of wine.

At this particular restaurant they didn't have the menu out already, so you had to sit down and wait for the waiter to bring you one. He arrived and we ordered a bottle of red to start. He brought the wine, poured it, then handed us the menus. The cheapest thing on there was about €30, so while he'd gone back in to give us time to decide, we just legged it.

 

Next time, I will bring my own cuttlery with me

Didn't mind paying the extra, if we would have the bread etc. But clearly, they were just looking for an excuse to put the charge on our bill.

 

but let's not forget the carnival of Venice in february...
