I know you've agreed to split the house 50/50, so you might want to get that agreed in writing with a solicitor. I did that with my divorce and it was less than £200. That precludes either party from making any further claim in future.

I know you say you have nowt else, but there may be lots of other stuff you might not have factored in such as furniture, white goods, pensions, etc which needs to be covered (have you got any pets?).

I got my divorce done for a set fee which to me was worth it because I couldn't be faffed with a DIY one, but I understand they aren't that difficult to do.

Sorry to hear you are splitting up after so long though, sending a :grouphug:

We've agreed about the fridge & stuff. The less stuff i've got the better tbh, will probably put things in storage for a while see.

Actually Merleworld has a good point there. 50/50 seems like the fair, reasonable thing but women are often told they can get more, particularly if there are kids under eighteen. It used to be 2/3rds to the mother, on the assumption that she had the kids, and 1/3 to the bloke. Often there was an arrangement that the mother could stay in the house until all the children had finished their education. It's understandable that the courts want to protect children but I think it goes too far sometimes. Women who wing it in the courts often do very well indeed. My husband's ex, who ran off with a work colleague, concocted a sob story for the judge when it turned out that her new fella didn't have quite as deep a pocket as she'd hoped, and she was awarded the house and all the family assets in perpetuity. On top of this OH had to pay a hefty maintenance bill. Even this wasn't enough for her; when we got together she tried to asset-strip my home as well. Things reached the height of lunacy one day when I found a valuer on my doorstep. Psycho Ex had decided that we had deliberately played down the amount my little house was worth, so she demanded a replay, insisting that the poor man search the place for hidden rooms which would magically add another £50,000 to the value. I made him inspect the understairs cupboard, on the basis that she would otherwise claim it was an ensuite bedroom and we'd have to go through the whole sorry procedure again.

PS My stepson sent OH a birthday card a few years back which read: 'It is better to have loved and lost, than to live with the psycho for the rest of your life'. :heehee:

        Thats a nitemare Clare:shocked:

She's made it quite clear she doesn't want anymore than a straight split, and she doesn't want the kids. She can't afford a solicitor due to the amount she drinks & the debts that go with that. Her salary takes her way outside legal aid, so i'm not worried about her trying to claim more.

Even if she did, I could put a watertight case that could swing it more in my favour.

Imagine if it were the other way round and I was the wife at home looking after the kids.

Husband earns a good wage but never gives a penny to me for housekeeping, never does any housework, maybe cooks one meal a week for the kids & then leaves the mess all over the kitchen for me to clean up.

Drinks all the time, leaves bottles where they are finished with, even if they fall over & get broken. Uses the floor as an ashtray.

Claims to be broke, but buys bags of firewood when i'm not here as too lazy to go out to the woodshed.

        I'd better stop, as i'm going into a rant.

Social services are aware of most of this as well.

Think I might have a case.

I like a drink myself, but I spend £15 a month brewing my own, not £300 a month buying it from one stop.

I'm sure you'll be fine, Ziggy, especially as it's now much more difficult for people to get legal aid, so you won't have the nightmare scenario of a career girl who manages to cook her books long enough to get limitless numbers of legal vultures picking away at your bones. But you'd be surprised just how crooked the whole thing is. You can be a useless mother, but the courts will still give you custody and all that goes with it unless it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt that you're - well, a hooker or a heroin addict. Courts see bad relationships between mothers and children as something to be repaired, not ditched. This really has nothing to do with the welfare of the children (my stepson wanted to live with his father) and everything to do with the welfare of the lawyers. They know that (a) no one will blame them for being very generous to mothers (females are always cuddly, honest, nurturing creatures, after all) and (b) no one gives a damn about a few disgruntled fathers. I don't think men and women will ever be truly equal until this gets sorted out. It is amazing how many career feminists become helpless little flowers for the benefit of the courts when it all goes wrong.

I know what you mean Clare, judge painted me as an evil english landlord when getting possesion of my house, despite the fact the woman had cost me over £50k and destroyed my house.

General announcement now. Off to West Bay, catch you all later.

My husband should read about your wife Ziggy, then he'd kiss the ground I walk on. Just saying.

Shall we do one of those ridiculous partner swap programmes, the ones where they place totally unmatched families & then sit back and watch as their heads explode:D

Oh, yea. But I would not want you wife to break my precious Nippon, when she got drunk, over his head. Nippon too expensive.
