This two varieties on one rootstock. Seems to be thriving a present and growing evenly
Both were small cleft grafts

Now since then I have tried some approach grafting But it is technically a bit more tricky



Tried 3 of these and 2 survived. One keeled over when I separated the scion root so obviously the graft didn't take properly

I need a bit of advice with this last one. 3 weeks ago I top cleft grafted a bloody butcher to and Arnold rootstock and that has healed well. 5 days ago I then side grafted a Vanessa to this combination. (Why I don't know but seemed a good idea at the time) Both tops are flourishing well and there is evidence of healing at the tongue side graft

The Vanessa is on the left and I need now to separate its root and hope that I don't kill the whole lot

Any ideas of the best way to go about slowly dividing the Vanessa root on the left. I don't know if it will work but it's only an experiment in grafting. It's certainly healthy enough at present!! Thanks

 

A complete guess from me but if the 'Vanessa' graft is only 5 days old I'd be tempted to leave it a while longer to make extra sure it's well taken.It looks really healthy though I'd then take a blade and slice below the clip,but then would the wound bleed? I wonder if you could seal it with wax...just thinking out loud @JWK the man for this one

Yes with the other side grafts I cut half way through first and then 3 days later cut the rest of the way through the scion root. I was thinking of similar but in even smaller increments so if there was signs of wilting I could shove it back in the healing chamber in darkness for 24hr and rest it. I need to slowly encourage it to thrive off the rootstock I will see what JWK says if he gets back. Bit of a daft idea anyway. Ta..

Ok. Consensus. Leave few more days then will start to divide Vanessa. Will let you know how goes. No more small plants left to try anything else and getting busy on allotment with routine stuff.

Interesting stuff, I think I might have to read more about this grafting malarkey.

 

Update on that double graft. I took well and I left it heal for a further 5 days and divided as suggested in the forum in two stages. No problems It never blinked

How,s Pot/Tom grafting going JWK? Was thinking of trying but I have no idea of the growing schedule to try and get even stems. Will leave it to you. I may try next year.

I have tried another weird one which is in the dark hopefully healing at present I will post photo when I uncover it in 2 days.
