Not really enough personal information to advise you FC
I do not wish to know the answer, but for your own information
Are you waged at the moment and new position is Salaried ?

I went from waged to Salaried management, Just look at the increase of pay Jack etc
Then found that I was earning more per month waged with overtime and less hours
than I was Salaried, more responsibility and unlimited hours expected
Just one thing to take into account.

Oh I found the no route back quote, is/was standard frightening procedure by HR to
cut down on applicants and indeed after several/five years of earning less than my
    engineers I reverted back

The company know you and your work/family commitments, so no need to worry about
what they would think if you mention child care etc they know you Thus if it were a problem would not short list you
You know your job they know you know your job
GO FOR IT Best of luck

    Jack McH

I can't try to influence you on your life decision but as long as you are up front about your home commitments and requirements (theirs and yours) then I can't see why you shouldn't throw your name in the hat.
I usually urge people to find out what isn't written in the job description prior to these things too;)
Get the application in (why do people have to apply if it's internal?!) before the weekend so it's not bothering you for two days when you can't do anything about it.

I am currently salaried, so there is no pit-fall that way, it should (hopefully) be a step-up for me that cements a lot of stuff that I am already doing.

They are asking for applications this time simply because the post was originally 'created' to get a specific person into the company from outside, and no-one was able to apply for it be they inside or not; essentially, the original job description was all but identical to that of my current grade, so some of my colleagues raised a grievance about it, which I believe was upheld (although nothing had been done about it until now); It makes sense when you are working in such a large organisation to advertise a post, if only to be seen to be fair.

I'm working all weekend anyway, so have plenty of time to mull things over.

Ok, that alone would be enough "office politics" to make me apply and become the fly in their ointment! :paladin:
I wouldn't necessarily expect to get the post (if they really are set on putting someone specific into the role) but I'd certainly give them a run for their money, just for their sheer arrogance.

Ok, so let's really think about it:

          1) You don't apply: you'll always be thinking, "What if?"

          2) You don't apply: this "specific" person gets it. Maybe actually isn't as good as Snr Man thought = resentment builds up; bitterness follows.

          3) You apply: you don't get it = you remain as you are. Nothing gained, but nothing lost either.
          4) You apply: you get it. Happy days :ccheers:

            5) You don't apply, your bosses remember that you were not interested, and simply don't think to recommend you next time an opportunity arises because they just assume you're content where you are.

            6) You do apply but don't get it, you at least get some feedback as to why so that next time an opportunity arises, you are in a better position to get it, plus you're on record as being interested so more likely to be told about other opportunities further down the line.

              Thanks all :)

I am a bit more settled on the idea now, and I am going to get my CV brushed up over the next day or so, and have a crack at it. Keep your fingers crossed :)

I threw my hat into the ring, and receipt has been acknowledged; that is about it so far, although I have been off on leave this week, so I wouldn't have heard anything anyway. The wheels tend to turn slowly at my place though, so I'm unlikely to hear for a while.
