Jays are so colourful Clare, we do get them in the garden but I've never seen one at the bird feeder.

We have just had a couple of Nuthatches on our feeder, I've never seen one before and had to search through our guide book, it must be the freezing conditions forced them into our garden, lovely to see.

A Nuthatch flew into my office window at the College of Law once. I had it on my desk when an elderly law tutor walked in & said "Oh, i've got one of those in my freezer"

All sorts of thoughts were going thru my head in the uncomfortable silence that followed, untill she said she was an artist & she was going to paint it.

    Jays ! Claralou. That's fabulous.
If I'm lucky I see them on the edge of the woods, but never in the garden.
It's as I said in OP - the severe weather can drive birds into the garden if food there for them.

Jays are beautiful ... And surprisingly noisy, when they get going! We don't have nuthatches here but we get lots at the little cottage in Wales where we sometimes stay. They're lovely.

I had a brainwave yesterday. I dug out the 3' between the back door and the back garden gate whereupon I had access to the carport. So I scattered the breadcrumbs on the floor in the carport where they wouldn't get snowed upon! Judging by the number of birds I saw flying past the window, they soon figured out it was there!

Now all I need to do is get some more stuff to put down. Any suggestions?

will the birds easily spot the food or do we have to make a sound for them to look ?
    Is mashed potatoes also appreciated?

    Hi Flower,

Don't know about mash but the birds will soon find the food, especially if you throw a small bit when a bird is looking. They keep their eye on other birds to see where they are feeding.

Come to think of it, pidgeons & sea gulls do alright off chips, so I guess potato won't do any harm.

That's an excellent link to the RSPB from Marley Farley, Daisees.
All I would add to it is the Blackies love fruit - fresh or dried.
Grapes seem to be the most popular of all (yes, I feed grapes to the Blackies and they sing for me).
Apples and pears are popular too.

Don't worry about the birds finding the food Miraflores. Once one bird has spotted it the rest will be in to see what they are getting.
Once they know where the food appears they are sitting, waiting for it.

Have put the sprat heads from lunch on the bird table. The carrion eaters will get into those before i get back down the garden no doubt.

Oh bring on the solstice, had enough of the dark days already.
