I have used a kindle for the last ten years to download reading books from Amazon.
We are having a few probs with Amazon and are getting emails of deliveries of goods we have not ordered charged for them too.anyway that's being sorted and rectified. But are now thinking of easing off dealing either a while. But this would leave !e not having any books after a period of time.
Does anyone know if I can get books down loaded from anywhere else please ?

Another vote for Gutenberg from me - although it is mainly older books that are out of print.

What sort of books do you read @Purple Streaks ? Modern fiction, classics, crime ?

Libraries definitely do ! I would be lost without them ! I always have a couple on the go.

Hampshire are supported by Borrow Box for ebooks and audio books and by RBdigital for e-magazines. If maybe different for other areas, ours changed to these a couple of years ago...I think it use to be Zinio Digital.

I have a Kindle but I thought it was tied to Amazon books only?

Yes, you are right @Sheal. The kindle is in a format that is Amazon run. My local libraries only download in the Rakuten/Kobo format so I had to buy a Kobo a year or so ago.

Previous to that I used my Kindle all the time to download classics that were free, on Amazon.

You know, I just remembered that someone sent me an email awhile back that had a link to a program that somehow interprets them from one format to another.

Let me see if I can find that...

I couldn't find the old email - but I did find this on the web. Fairly cheap program.

eBook DRM Removal, Remove DRM from ePUB PDF AZW etc

Our libraries use "cloudlibrary" which is compatible with rakuten/kobo

The ones just over the border use "overdrive"which works with amazon/kindle

Shows just how miserable these giants are that they won't use the same format!

Anyway, because I didn't do the conversion deal with the books, I simply bought a used Kobo for around 30 or your pounds and it's been great downloading library books for free!

                    Hope this helps a little.

I use my kindle to read free books from Gutenberg, it just takes an extra couple of steps. Amazon are a bit cheeky charging for all the classics which are free elsewhere.

Mrs JWK only reads real books and during lockdown has been buying used from abebooks.com, they are sometimes cheaper than on the kindle.

I only buy fiction from Amazon. As a history reader I tend to buy non fiction in book form locally, as I use those as reference books. Reference books don't work at all well on Kindle.

I, also, only read real books. A bit of a pain since lockdown but between first and second lockdown our library was open so kept swapping them. The last time I got 18 books out :rolleyespink:. Years ago they restricted loans to a maximum of four but gradually upped it over the years. They let me increase it to 18 as they saw on my record how many books I get through.

Since lockdown I have been working my way through some of the few thousand books I have acquired over the last 50 years (most of them are job lots at next to nothing). I also have the stock of books (donated for our charity sale on open day) that I'm starting to work my way through. now that we can't open the garden the charity will come and pick up about 400-500 for when they reopen their shops.

We also have a lot of non-fiction and textbooks (all sorts) that Mrs Shiney has started selling on Amazon. The funds all go to charity. I've just packaged two to go to the post office tomorrow.

@Purple Streaks I know that we have a lot of books on art but don't know what they are or whether they're for sale. I'll ask Mrs Shiney. I know she doesn't have Alphonse as I asked her the other day.

Most of the fiction books have been donated to us but the 1,000+ non-fiction/text books are our own collection which we are now trying to reduce. They would include art, gardening (of course), cookery, medicine, therapies (lots of different sorts), hobbies and crafts, yoga and similar, biographies, autobiographies, history etc. We have been collecting books for over 50 years. :old::)
