Sadly, there was neither of them there - or if there was, I missed them somehow. The English Electric Lightning in particular is one that I would love to see, simply because it is a fascinating design with those engines and clever ducting. I'd have loved to work on these wonderful machines if I had the chance.

There used to be a rusty old lightning left by the side of the A1. That site is now where the camp is set up for the A1/A14 road improvements.

One of the No.III Squadron Lightning aircraft (Delta) that I worked on is now standing in the grounds of Air Training Corps in Lincolnshire. I saw it when on the way to visit and have a meal at what was the Officers Mess of No.617 Squadron which is now a Restaurant but has all the memoribilea include the bough of a tree that a Lancaster managed "pick up" in it's fuselage while taking off fully bomb laden. Nearby is a Pub, The Blue Bell, which was the favourite watering hole of No.617 Squadron during WWII and has all the signatures and names of the pilots written by them on the low ceiling. It also has the pictures of all the aircrews and ground crews hung on the walls.......a fantastic museum in itself.

I have just read a site that says the old Lightning was Newark way. It's been a while since I've seen it so I could have been mistaken.

Thanks for the tour FC. Amazing shots and equally amazing aircraft. :dbgrtmb: It's also a few decades since I was there and agree with Pete, there's now a lot more to see.

That's right, Jack. I saw it many times when I was based at Midland Radar, RAF North Luffenham about 8 miles away in Rutland.....brought back a lot of memories.

That isn't the one I saw, Jack:heehee:. The one I saw was a Mk1A standing on the forecourt of a Garage, in great condition, on the Southbound lanes near Stamford.

The Anglia Motel on the A17 near Holbeach has an interesting collection of military vehicles on its forecourt.

I remember vaguely seeing the Black Arrows, I was my first airshow, Farnborough in the early 60s I would think, I was pretty young.
Lightnings were the stars of many airshows for years, and as Armandii says I think it held the rate of climb record for many years.

I could be wrong but I seem to remember it was only beaten by a seriously stripped down version of the F15 sometime in the 80s.
