I have a Sony e-reader and wonder if it's possible to download books from the Amazon site and load them onto it. Having read the stuff on the site it seems that you can get software to put Kindle files onto laptops, tablets etc, but it doesn't mention other brands of e-reader.

I wondered if that was because the device is not designed to take new programs onto it. Or if they just want you to buy a Kindle.

I ask, because I've noticed the Game of Thrones books seem a lot cheaper on Amazon. It could save me pounds to buy from there, rather than Waterstone's which I stick with because I know I can manage the download correctly!

Yours uses the e-pub format which kindle doesn't so you'd have to convert the file to use it first and assuming you don't come across any drm issues...

Loofah is more than likely correct, I don`t know, but I would test it with a freebie from Amazon book site, you can set it to 0p and it offers free books, see if it downloads.

I've downloaded a book from Amazon and it will open on the PC but I can't make it open any other way and it won't open in calibre or the Sony program. Any ideas?

Sorry @Loofah I didn't read all the posts ;) I've had issues with ebooks I've 'obtained' and managed to fudge them in calibre. Sometimes I've had to save them before as a .txt file before calibre will let me convert

I'm not buying a kindle, I've already got two Sonys!

Just looked at Loofah's link, I eventually managed to drag and drop the file but it doesn't seem to offer any options to save in a different file format, it offered to download the file from Amazon but what it actually did was search for covers.

It's like what I have on my desktop is just a shortcut icon which is not in itself a downloaded file.
