I'm wondering how they came to that conclusion?

I'm guessing they've just tried too bags side by side to compare?

If their ones are anything like mine there's physically no room to earth-up. I've got a complete bush of leaves on top, and the soil is already pretty much to the top of the bag.

I'm assuming the foliage & the sides of the bag stops the light getting to the tubers, bit like me growing Rhubarb in a brick coldframe, the leaves stopped the light getting to the stems so they were lightly blanched enough to win 1st prize:yes:

Yeah that makes sense - there's definitely no light (or water!) getting through the dense canopy on the top of my bag! I also put a bit of chicken wire over the top to stop the cat scratching in the soil before the growth came through. The chicken wire and the plant are now the same matted mess! :snork:

 Might pay to stick a bit of hose with a funnel on the end to get some water in there, that's the main cause of low yield with potatoes in bags.

Cheers Zig - yeah have been watering them with the hose. Looked a bit silly last few days watering my chicken wire in the rain!
