My garden is way too big to allow me to have the modern electric edging tool mores the pity. I use the old method of long handled edging shears. My pair are ancient (think they belonged to possibly my grandfather but definitely my father and I'm an OAP!) I used to get them sharpened by a "wee man" who lived locally but he has moved so doubt there will be anybody close who will sharpen them even if they knew what they were doing.
Think it may be time to invest in a new pair and clueless as to which brand to get. Not thrilled at having to pay a fortune for them but at the same time no point in paying buttons and the shears blunt in a couple of goes. Hope someone can assist. Thanks.

    Hi silu,
Mine are Wilkinson Sword, pretty ancient too, used professionally for 13 years, but I sharpen them on a stone every once in a while and they keep soldiering on.

You just stroke the stone diagonally along it's length at an angle to the blade...when you've done it a few times, you get the feel for it. You can't get right into the angle of the blades, obviously, but it does enough for them to cut efficiently.

I sharpen my shears using a flat diamond stone.
You can get into the corners better.

      Lots of different kinds available.

But if the shears are really old and been reground over the years it might be a good idea to invest in a new pair.
