One of my friends is an electronics guru - he told me that high power led bulbs (by high we mean 15w here to produce the equivalent light of a 100w incandescent) will produce a lot of heat - I asked him because my 15w led bulb was too hot to handle.

I think in the lumens per buck competition - CFL's are more cost effective than led's.:dbgrtmb:

I agree and disagree @clanless - high power LED's will produce heat, hence they need to have suitable heatsinks to ensure that they do not overheat, however, I would still far rather have an LED array than CFL's any day of the week, not least as the light out put is more usable.

I've changed my mind led are the best per buck - I was still thinking they were 20 sheckles a piece.

Have a look at this pic - all 100w lumen output:

Is it just me or does the incandescent give a better spread of light?

Not just you - it is a fact. It is a symptom of how LED lamps work. Bear with me and I will draw a wee diagram.

In the words of the great Arnold Fartzenshagger - - I'll be back!

OK, not the best drawings, but it will hopefully explain:

Ive just put LED lights in the living room, I don't see the need to go above 5W tbh unless there outside as a security light or you only have one holder in the room, my light holders are 5w max rated anyhow its not wise to put larger bulbs in you risk a fire check the holder rating before you buy bulbs.

I have two LED strip lighting bars in my kitchen in replacement of the fluorescent tube lighting and they're brighter and consume much less power than the fluorescent strips.:snorky:

Just to put the cat among the pigeons!

There is a theory with, at the moment, only a little evidence (mainly empirical) that LED lights close to eyes (reading lamps etc.) could have a deleterious effect on the vitreous lining in the eyes. :dunno:

Well, mine are fitted to the Kitchen Ceiling, Shiney, which should give enough distance:dunno::snorky:. Don't forget there is also a Government backed scheme to swap over Street and road lighting from Sodium lamps to LED.

Well our workshop, where I work, is pretty much all LED lighting now.
And I must admit, although it is brighter, sometimes it's difficult to read a steel rule until you get the reflection sorted out, from some angles you just cant see the numbers.
