Yes, but they don't work during a power cut :dunno: :heehee:. We had 11 power cuts this year

I"ve got a petrol generator for use during power cuts. If I'd known just how many we were going to get living in this village I'd have installed a secondary lighting circuit fed by the outside genny [1] when I rewired the house, rather than having cables trailing around the house during power cuts.

[1] Don't know whether the nanny state has banned householders doing such things these days. I used to do all my own electrics, plus fireplace and stove installations.

Up until a few years ago we never too bothered by the power cuts as we had the gas lights and gas cooker in the kitchen and Tilley lamps and coal fire in the lounge.

Now we've come into the modern world (sort of :heehee:) we have to keep warm by crowding round one of us sucking a Polo mint! :hate-shocked:

They are both a radiation hazard! :yikes: Gas mantle - Wikipedia

Much of the radiation found on the beaches near Dungeness/Hinckley Point nuclear power stations was due to discarded gas mantles from sea anglers' Tilley lamps.

It's been proven to be just as true as sea anglers being to blame for declining fish stocks (and not commercial trawlers scooping up thousands of tonnes of fish).

Well, they won't be changing our street light bulbs to LED as we don't have street lights, that will save a few hundred quid

You can also convert gas to run on dog poo!

From stools to fuels: the street lamp that runs on dog do

                      And lawnmowers!

Do you remember the farmer down in the West Country that ran his vehicles on chicken poo? I think he made some sort of alcohol brew from it. They put a stop to it because he wasn't paying fuel duty on it.

Well, after a bit of research, I discovered that I could make the conversion for next to nothing (especially with Amazon money from surveys ), so I ordered the parts which arrived this morning.

The existing lights were 6 x G4 12v Halogen fellows, with very snug frosted glass globes/diffusers that are only fractionally larger than the bulbs they cover. It transpired that the drivers I had ordered were much larger than their description had said, but rather than return them I decided to modify them to fit; so, I gutted out the fitting, reshaped/re-sized the driver, modified the metal structures within the light fitting itself to accommodate the new driver, tidied up the wiring in the ceiling (whoever installed it initially clearly didn't 'do' tidy), cleaned and polished up the chrome, and cleaned the glass shades, then installed new LED bulbs. Five hours all in.

We now have roughly double the amount of light from the same fitting, for a third of the energy, and I think it is safe to say that I did a half-decent job of it, as Mrs C wondered how I had managed to get a brand new light fitting that looked the same as the other one...... ;)

The bad news is that there is another two that need doing.

@pete I've only just saw your post pete and I had the same 12W and mine didn't get hot and lasted for ages, i'd say it was faulty mate.

You can buy 13W's off the internet and there's not much difference in the heat :)

Amazing how much quicker everything is once you have worked out how to make everything fit..... both of the other lights are now done, and even in daylight they brighten the room significantly when they are all on (we virtually never have more than one on at at time). All the chrome looks nice and shiny and the frosted glass diffusers look as good as new (thank you VWP)
