Epimediums

Thanks. Remember you mentioned the Virginia bluebells last year. Just looked up mayapples, the flower is pretty cute. The leaf is like an umbrella for it. I'll give them a go in pots

Goes well with the "horny goat weed" too..

 

yes, I have a book on eatable plants and May Apples was in there. do think I did try the apple years ago but not real good as I recall. still alive.

 

I have an epimedium in my garden - actually it was Jenny who spotted it, 2014, I would have taken it as a weed - moved it to where it wouldn't be disturbed. I've yet to see it flower. Thought it was one year, but it turned out to be new leaf growth I know @shiney has it in his garden.

 

I grow epimedium perralchicum (Barrenwort) and sort of grow Rubra. I've had perralchicum for many years and was persuaded to buy Rubra by quite a well known nursery. I suggested it was not the hardiest/easiest to get to grow but was told otherwise Wished I'd listened to myself! 2 of the 3 plants I bought died year 1 and the remaining plant has neither increased in size or had 1
flower in 5 years. pretty leaves tho if you can get it to like where you live The yellow Barrenworr is ok. You need to remember to prune off the leaves early spring otherwise you don't see the flowers very well, I usually forget to do this a la this year so not very good a plant for me having a huge garden with millions of jobs to do. If I run my little charity plant sale this year (doubtful as so far behind because of the dreadful early spring) I will offer all my Epimedium for sale as I have many other plants which suit me better. Maybe others have had more success but the pretty pictures on the internet of the plant and the reality I personally have found is not the same.

 

Hell's teeth @shiney your Epimidiums looks a sight better than mine do. I really do think they suffer with our colder climate.

I'm hoping I have the yellow version; they are the prettier of the two to my eye plus, I planted my one in the yellow patch

So bit finnicky with flowering then M got my fingers crossed for you for this year! And I agree, the yellow/whites and oranges are "nicer" than the pinky ones IMO, still like them though.

I'm still going to have a go at them in pots and I'll give a bit of protection come the colder weather. I like a challenge..I don't have a shady spot which is in open ground so they will like it or lump it.. probably the latter

If you do manage to get round to selling a few Silu, I'd gladly take some off your hands in exchange for a few bob and postage

Massively overcrowded I've split it up and potted a couple and dotted a few around to see how they go.
