I have a small Eucalyptus tree in the garden that was planted two years ago and is not starting to get large. I would love to keep it under control as I've heard they can be pruned and trimmed into a shrub like shape. How would I go about this - its fairly straggly at the moment, but is approaching 6 foot tall, so anything I do would need to be sooner rather than later? And what time of year should I attempt this?

Now would be a good time.

You can cut back fairly hard but I always leave at least a few leaves still on the plant, as I did kill one once with drastic pruning.

I think the species also has some effect when it comes to how hard to cut back, some probably take hard pruning better than others.
