I have been looking online at fence paints eg culprinol and wilko garden range but the reviews aren't fantastic.

I'm wanting a grey or bluey colour but the likes of ronseal etc only comr in the usual browns/greens as far as I can see.

Can anyone recommend a good one or have you tried the ones above and find them okay?

No one brand is 'outstanding' - in the end it's down to personal preference/experience. Everyone will have their own preferred brand.

All I can say is that I use Cuprinol because it is sprayable - I think it soaks well into the wood - you can still get the same colour for years after your first pot - it is within my budget. I'm sure there are other brands that perform the same - but I'm just happy with Cuprinol.

I have painted everything with the same colour - it might be just me - but IMHO uniformity of colour looks good in the garden.

Not sure how long you will be able to purchase the same colour, in for example the Wilko brand. I take internet reviews with a shovel of salt - they are, shall we say, 'unreliable'.

I used Cuprinol Autumn Red on my fence and have been well pleased with the outcome. I tend to think people will give negative reviews when actually poor prepping is the more likely cause.

Last year I used Ronseal Fencelife plus and was not pleased, it needed 4 coats to cover bare wood.

Lets face it, if it contains wax it is only there for one purpose.
To shed water for a few days after you have applied it, so it looks like its doing a good job.

Most of the real "preservatives" are now banned and most fencing is pressure treated so any thing that stains your fence the colour you want it will work.
Most seem to be water based so are only colorants, so its down to which holds its colour longest and which penetrates the best.
Whatever you use, use it after a dry spell so it will be absorbed better.

It does mention it needs 3 coats on planed wood on B&Q website,on the bright side you may not have to do it again for 5yrs:)

Yeah, back in the old days they said the only plant friendly preservative was "Green" Cupriol , but I grew plants up pressure treated timber without any problems, even creosote once it was weathered.
Things have got out of hand these days, as is usual, and anything that is not water based is the devil.

True, but I needed it to be delivered so I bought it from Screwfix and only saw it mentioned on the tin after the first coat was patchy - my fault for not reading the label first.

I've been really happy with my Cuprinol Ducksback in 'Silver Copse'. It's a great shade of grey [to me anyhow] and easy to apply, with good coverage. I Just used a timber brush to apply it. Have had to touch it up here and there every now and then but overall I've found it great. I didn't find it pricey - in fact I remember thinking how reasonable it was. The last [5 litre] tin I bought from Travis Perkins was around £15 I think. Have included a pic to give you an idea of the colour in case you're interested  fence colour.jpeg
