Ferocactus Horridus

This one get's me everytime i am in the greenhouse or try to move it, the hooked spines get caught in your sleeve's and just won't leave go, i've threatened it with a pruner's many a time.

I do like the fish hook types, I've got a couple of big Ferrocactus that I cant lift anymore so they just stay pretty much where they are now so don't get hooked quite so often these days.

Interesting over time watching them grow, they start out as a plant with tubercles, then become ribbed, and then as the diameter increases they occasionally start a new rib from the growing point.

 

@pete thanks for the info Pete , didn’t know about the extra ribs , as much as it spike’s me I still love ferocactus

 

I have a few that do that too ... It's an impressive plant though. How long have you been collecting them for ?

hi Michael, I’ve been interested in cactus for around 20 +yrs and once had an enormous collection which was ruined by weather and unruly kids I guess, some kids we’re always breaking pane’s of glass and in the end I give it up.
It’s just since the COVID lockdowns, I started looking for something to do and got interested again.
