Sorry if this should be posted elsewhere, but as I'm trying to identify the stone in the picture it occurred to me that this would be a good place to place my question.

We've got oodles of these stones in the garden, but we don't know what it is ? Does anyone know please ?

Any ideas please as to what I can use them for ? Will they make a good rockery ?

It looks like granite to my untrained eye.

Hi Tdubya, my husband thinks it is probably carboniferous limestone.
If it is it will be very good for creating a rockery and growing lime loving plants and alpines.

Not very good on rocks but I would also have guessed some kind of limestone.

Unless its been purposely brought into your garden from a distance, it would help to know what the local rock is in your area.

Hi Tdubya. It's definately not flint. It looks very much like a fine grained limestone, in which case it would be perfect for use in a rockery.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Flint wasn't my word & in hindsight misleading so apologies for that. Its definitely not granite nor sandstone so I think the limestone suggestion is the most probable. I think a post about rockery & shade loving plants beckons...
