Going to have a sniff tomorrow to see if it really does smell of cloves.
Just looked up the meaning of Hesperis matronalis, apparently Hesperis means 'of the evening' and matronalis means belonging to a married woman.
So does that mean I'll have to go there tomorrow night, take Mrs Trunky with me and see what happens?

The French word comes from the Greek karyophyllon Their name for the Clove tree ...karyon a nut and phyllon a leaf.
No one knows where the Greek word comes from so there ends the tale.
