I wasn't sure if I would get any this year as only saw one small frog last year and no spawn, mainly due to some adjoining old overgrown gardens being renovated so expect a lot of their habitats been lost.

Had not seen anything this year until literally the other day when there were two clumps of spawn so looks like we still have a few around though yet to actually see one.

Think their biggest enemy are cats who seem to delight in playing with them, though one year was amazed to see , from the house window, a cat playing with a 8" ball ? only to find it was literally a ball of frogs, seems its a defensive method .

Now use one of the pir water jet sprayers to deter the cats, which is very effective, probably too much as I often end up with a soggy bottom when I forget its there ! :heehee:

The Frogs in the pond were croaking away quite happily this morning when I was filling the Bird Feeders. Your first residential Frogs will turn up, Martin, never fear!!.:snorky:

I think it depends on the Cats, Ricky:dunno::cat-kittyandsmiley:. I have two Cats that can't get out of the garden due to the high fences, nor can Cats get in. One of the Cats, [Jenny],

loves to pad around the Wildlife pond and stalk the Frogs only to jump back when the Frog in question decides to leap into the pond:heehee: She's never killed a Frog and, in fact, both Cats [the other is Sally]

allow the Birds and Hedgehogs to be the Bosses of the Garden. The Black Birds will "yell" at the Cats to tell them to get out of the way when the Birds are worm hunting in the borders, while the Hedgehogs just come out of the borders and amble past the Cats who just ignore them.:coffee:

              Hi,

              Lovely looking pictures there.

Don't get me wrong, I love cats and dogs, was brought up with both, but we are almost plagued with them, though the latter mostly on leads.

Seems our local Toms do seem to enjoy frogs and toads as used to often find chewed parts of them around the garden and mine is covered with 6ft high fences which I have watched them easily jump onto the top.

My water jet is aimed so its about 2ft above them, they don't get any forceful spray directly on them; its the clatter the jet mechanism makes plus the random spray of the water that quickly teaches them is a no go garden.
No way does it hurt them, unlike some folk who readily kick or thrown stones etc at them.

In my previous garden I had a lovely pond with resident frogs. The biggest threat to them were my chickens! I caught one of them running up the garden with a small frog dangling from its beak

My garden was full of them while i was clearing it so theirs plenty around, its not that easy for them to get in after trying to cat proof the garden, i will get some spawn hopefully they will return next year i have lots of ivy at low level and nooks and crannies for them to hide in.

                    I didn't:heehee:

My fences, Ricky, are 8' high with frames of 2' x 6' slack Chicken Wire on top. The slack wire leans towards any Cat trying climb up and their own weight while at an incline makes the Cat lose their grip and fall off. It was intentionally built to keep my Cats in the garden and safe but had the extra benefit of keeping other Cats out. My garden gate is over 6' tall and no cat has conquered it yet.

Those look good, Martin, but I can see a problem with them.:dunno:, as they're inclined inwards, if fitted, towards your garden. That's fine, but it doesn't take into account any Cats wanting to get into the garden, as the incline will actually give the "incoming" Cat something to walk on and jump into the garden..:dunno::doh:

It looks like a gun then  i only get the odd one now days i put cctv to monitor where there getting in and make it hard work for them, the older cats keep out as its not as easy as most gardens to get out off, its when someone near me gets a young cat they have to come and explore and more agile than the older cats.
