    And we're away  DSCN0695.JPG

Some Kelsae seeds that Loli sent me :)

Thought i'd try starting off in vermiculite with some compost at the bottom this year :)

    Anyone else starting today? :)

      Aye up @Zigs :blue thumb:
It looks like you have maybe 1" of compost covered with 'neat' Vermiculite, and presumably the seeds are about 1/2" below the surface? I'm a bit concerned (if this is the case) that once the seed sprout, they might struggle a bit to reach the compost, and when they do, whether there will be enough nutrient to sustain them?

        Wotcha Freddy :)

Used to grow Lupins in neat vermiculite, it's only to start them off, the yoghurt pots were the only clean pots I had to hand and its chucking it down outside

I'll find and clean something bigger over the next few days :)

From memory I think they should be left in their initial pot until at the 'crook' stage, hence my concern :blue thumb:
Chucking it down here too

Remember, once they're up, as much light as you can give them, and not too much heat :dbgrtmb:

I've always planted onion and shallot sets and am thinking of having a go at sowing seeds instead. Do the slugs usually get them though when you plant them out? Also I can't imagine how a seed can create a onion in the same amount if time as a set would... I'm not after massive bulbs but saving some money by growing them from seed..

Snails ca have a go in a wet year, but they wouldn't worry if it was sets or seed

                      You'd be surprised :)

Ideally, you would need a greenhouse for growing from seed. Assuming you have one, sow them around the end of February/early March. Imo, grown from seed outperform sets:blue thumb:

I do have a greenhouse, but not a heated one. I'm assuming if I had a heated one I could start them off now like the rest of you?
