Growing a Walnut Tree in a small space

For avenues like that, I think they usually plant too close on the assumption that some of the trees are going to die. When the trees are big enough to not be at risk from disease, deer, or feral teenagers, then they can decide how to thin them out. And whilst the trees are getting to that height, the tighter spacing looks better.

 

Yeah only we are talking council here, so no plan whatsoever.
I'd guess 15ft apart.
The only plan will be at some point move in with the chainsaw and cut the lot down.
Or do the usual, chop the tops off to make them "safe ".

 

I got a feeling they were a gift to the town to commemorate the millennium.

 

Lots of very useful info here, thanks everybody. My instincts are telling me to let it be and see when at what stage it becomes problematic though I know this will only lead to regret. The problem is I do enjoy having it at this early stage of it's life. The biggest trouble I am having with it at the moment is trying to go grow anything underneath it which is a whole other story for another day.

 

when we wanted advice the tree specialist told us never cut our original walnut tree back hard as this causes an infection which is air born.so can carry to other trees / shrubs. But if we wanted it down to let him know . We then found out that he sold the tree wood on. Got a good price too as even the 1 inch pieces can be used in gun making once it is air dried out. If anyone is to make off this tree ,let it be you .
So beware on your decision.

 

Squirrels wander in quite a big area @shiney. They can store food in cheek pouches which makes it easier for them to move nuts etc. around.
