its hard work using those (the ones I have tried) .... you'd be better off with a cheap flymo with a sharp blade

I have a hand mower use it all the time,I like the quietness and simplicity of it,:)as long as the lawn is pretty level no problems:)

Hand mowers are all the reel or cylinder type and cannot cope with grass which is very long or wet (unlike modern petrol rotary mowers) . The side-wheel type are still made and are OK for light mowing, but they have limitations, for example cannot cut right to the edge of lawns. The rear roller type will cut to the lawn edge and produce the classic striped finish, but I don't think they are still made. You might, as I did get hold of a good second-hand one. The make to go for if you can is Greens as they usually have more blades than Webb or Qualcast. I got a 1934 Qualcast Panther a few years ago, it had been in the same family since new. Still cuts well, but to be very honest I find it too easy to get the petrol mower out !! - The mower I have came with its original leaflet:

Addendum: Had a quick surf - there is still a roller type on the market 'Handy Tribute' at what seems to be a reasonable price. Could be worth investigating.

I don't like the way that Flymos throw stones around.

Can I ask you the make of yours? I was looking at a Bosch one.

Would one with a roller at the back be heavy to push around? Qualcast Panther is the one I was looking at, they are owned by Bosch now.

Well, my old 1934 model is indeed fairy heavy - they made 'em to last in those days! - Have a look at the buyer reviews on the Handy Tribute on this link:

I used to use one when I was a kid, they were ok if the grass was cut regularly.

Got put off flymos when I found a putrified dead rat in the long grass. It went everywhere:eeew:
