Can anybody recommend a small evergreen tree/plant for the front garden area of my new house?

The garden is East facing, and suffers from a windy position, so I'm looking for something hardier than most!

Hello Chris and welcome to GC.

Perhaps a Bay Laurel ... you can trim them to shape and keep them to a size you prefer. You often see them in pots done in various shapes, conical, lollipop, etc. You also have the benefit of fresh Bay leaves for culinary purposes.

Bay tree topiary, as Victoria said, or maybe Box instead - again Topiary. Holly can be shaped too, and they come variegated and so on, and will have berries in Winter (need to be careful on variety to get a female plant, and if no Male plants nearby then a variety that will carry berries regardless)

You could try Viburnum Tinus, Elaeagnus, Sarcococca Confusa.
