    Mild and 21°c today !
    @shiney , you can only revert to Fahrenheit when Brexit is finalised in 2028. And as he was Polish the use of F will be subject to negotiations. :biggrin:

      @HarryS
      But Celcius was Swedish and the word Centigrade comes from Latin and the Latins occupied the West coast of the peninsula that is now Italy but was not part of the EU. So they're all foreigners!

      The F word has been used in this country for 500 years. :heehee:

      We're still allowed, under EU rules, to use Imperial measurements and Fahrenheit was adopted by us from our Polish friend.

      And, of course, that's not to mention my old pal Lord Kelvin.

          From what I remember 1K is equal to absolute zero or -273ish Celsius. I also vaguely recall that nobody has ever managed to achieve that temperature. I don't know how long ago Kelvin was about but how did he come to that benchmark? I could google it of course but where's the fun in that.

          The others make sense. I believe Fahrenheit is based on Mercury .Celsius is based on water. Everybody can relate to water freezing or boiling. I was born in 1971, after decimalisation, so I only really ever understand Celsius.

            Anyway, Poland isn't in the EU (is it?, I lose track). Even if it was anything we had pre EU would still exist. Centigrade, Latin? That definitely predates EU. Even if you consider EU to be the modern evolution of the Holy Roman Empire, Latin still predates it.

            I once did a presentation on the formation and decline of the Holy Roman Empire. I drew computerised maps and everything. I was quite chuffed with it. It was a precursor to Bonnie Prince Charlie's 1745 uprising.

            Sorry. I'm digressing again. Warm and sunny here today. A nice breeze too. Just as I like it. My phone says 16 but I'm sure it's more than that.

                        Heatwave didn't happen here, noit in F or C or even K.

                        Mostly low cloud, the sun came out for an hour when it went up to 20C.

                        A bit windy also, so not bad for the time of year, but hardy something to get excited about.

                        Lets hope tomorrow is better, before the Ex hurricane arrives :snorky:

                                From what I recall being taught at school: Fahrenheit did invent the mercury thermometer and to calibrate it he came up with his scale of 0 to 100 based on nature.

                                At the bottom for zero he used the coldest thing he could find. At that time the coldest thing was salt water at the top of the Swiss alps in deep snow. So far so good.

                                Fahrenheit wanted the 100 mark to be the temperature of the human body. To get an accurate reading he found a handy place with lots of willing people so he could take an average. Unfortunately it was a hospital. So Fahrenheit set his upper 100 deg mark based on sick people!

                                As no one had ever accurately measured human temperatures before on a calibrated scale, it was not known that sick people generally have a higher temp. This is why a normal body temperature is lower than what Fahrenheit had intended, i.e. 98.6 degrees.
