Kristen....the hedge does look good, but I still don't think it'll like being kept at 3 to 4ft in height, sorry! :)

Noisette.......Abelia is a definite possibility but not the variegated form, I think 45ft will look a bit over the top. :)

FC.....I like your wit! :heehee: A very good idea but it doesn't have leaves or flowers! As it happens my last house had sandstone quoins.

I had considered Ceonothus but it doesn't live very long, I want the hedge to see me out not the other way round, unless I move house of course. :heehee:

My grandfather was a stone mason working from that very quarry, and he worked all over the UK and Ireland (did quite a bit on the Isle too if I recall correctly), and he carved many a flower into the stone.

There's not many that possess skills like that any more. Mind you there's still a good few stonemasons here as stone is still used to construct a number of homes......for those that are well off of course, they come at a price!

Have you any pictures of his carvings FC, I bet they were wonderful! :)

Yeah, you are probably right ... although ... in your weather it may grow 3' up and then 6' horizontally!!

That's what I'm opting for this autumn...a mixture of Ceanothus and Oleander. I had a Ceanothus 'Autumnal Blue' in the UK that is still going, AFAIK, 30 years on:)

I'm still undecided about the hedge, I think I might take a walk round a good local nursery at the weekend and see if that gives inspiration. I'm still keeping the Abelia in mind though. :)
