    Thank you @Lolimac :)

I have now got my planter (pic attached).
I couldn't find a suitable trellis, but still looking.
The guy said that the planter had been recently treated. I asked him if he had taken it to London to see a show, but he just looked at me .

My question is....... does this need to be lined in any way? If so, what with? rubble sack plastic with drainage provision?

    Edit: It's 50X50cm

Yes some drainage holes in the bottom before you line it and I'd use old compost bags too:dbgrtmb:

Deffo some drainage holes. I use carpet offcuts (but not the water repellent type of carpet) tacked onto the sides just to stop the soil washing out through the gaps.

I am trying to forget that vet (I won't be planting forget-me-nots for them ).
So......here are the plants I bought, forget the pansies (£1).
            Did I go overboard? :snork:

            GC3.jpg

And I have put some rubble sacks in. Will this be ok if I cut along each slat in the base?
Ironically, I won't have compost bags until I empty them into it :snork:.

Not really. Drill some holes in the base and just line the sides. Put some stones in the bottom. The wood will swell as it gets damp so without some holes in the bottom there will be no drainage. All the wooden planters I've made had an 8 to 10mm gap between the bottom sheets and then lined with carpet to stop soil run off.

                Its too late .
I held back as long as I could , but then went for it
I have watered it, and seen the juices run clear from under it :blue thumb:
I will just have to see how it goes.
I still need to sort the trellis though, and buy the climber.

As Longk said Geezer the wood will swell and then there'll be no drainage and the plants will soon get waterlogged and have little chance of surviving. It wouldn't be a big job just to whip the plants out and drill a few holes through the bottom and add a few crocks and fill again:thumbsup: it will pay off in the end:dbgrtmb:

I like the planter NG. :dbgrtmb: Could you make your own trellis for it?

This tickled me, :heehee: I can just imagine the blank look on the guys face. Don't you hate it when a joke gets wasted!

Violas? they just flower on and on, the perennial violas are scented as well! :)

Since we chatted last I have lost another dog (old age) so I know how you are feeling. :grphg:

Hi NG I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your furby friends.. I have a couple of these Jasmin climbing up trellis.. I cut them back each spring and they come back beautifully every year and the scent from the flowers is gorgeous.. https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/details?plantid=1939

For the box itself I think I would have a patio rose say sweet dreams or the like and then fill with bedding plants in the spaces left.. http://www.suttons.co.uk/Gardening/Flower+Plants/Roses/Rose+Plant+-+Sweet+Dream_247480.htm#247480

I loved my 2 rogues, but I love dogs too.
I have been playing with my friends beautiful dog today. He is a lovely colour.
He looks multi-coloured in this pic, but he is pretty even (more the colour of his cheeks all over).
