    Hi All,

I've moved into a new house and I've noticed there are a lot of flies in the garden, especially when the weathers warm.

At first I thought they were cluster flies because there were so many. I'm finding them all over my benches and clothes airer, but having looked online, I think they're maybe just common house flies?

Does anybody know what sort of flies they are and what could be attracting them?

    Thanks

Are they big, if so they could be blow flies Google that and compare. They live on rotting flesh so not a good thing to have around in numbers. Hope I am wrong.

I'd say there perhaps the same size as a house fly? Here's another photo which may give some idea of size. I went outside right now and didn't see any, perhaps cause of the weather, but I know that as soon as the suns out we tend to see quite a few.

The images of Blow Flys seem to show pretty pronounced red eyes and metallic bodies which I didn't notice with these.. hopefully its not that as there's no rotting flesh around that I've seen so not sure would could be drawing them if it was. The garden is fairly well kept, although the previous owner did have a compost with egg shells and other decomposing material inside which I've since got rid off. We've moved to the countryside and there's a lot of farm land about.

Looks like cluster flies , normally they hibernate in the hundreds in lofts for the winter .... with all this cold only just starting to come out ... not found in cities very much normally a country side fly , adults feed off nectar pollen but the babies feed on earth worms !! Sitting in the sun before they start mating ....

Thanks All. I thought they were Cluster flies at first too, but apparently Cluster flies overlap their wings when they are resting? But these don't.

I've purchased a fly trap which I'll get out there in the summer and hopefully that'll help control the population, as I don't fancy getting the BBQ in its current state!
