Quick update for anyone who might care, the first slab is up and it appears there’s a significant network of what I think is field horsetail

What is that stone like looking underneath the roots?
I have never seen roots of that field horsetail, but if it’s that, and reading the GW description (2 metres apart deep roots), I don’t envy you.

After being forum member first in the GW forum for 6 years and now here for 2 years, I always recommend to everyone who wants to buy a house with garden and who cares about gardening, ‘look at the garden before you buy a house’.

With all the issues, if I was in such situation, I would think about calling a company to remove everything, and start from scratch. They have their machines that do the job quickly. Would cost a considerable amount of money, but what counts money compared to having a garden that I couldn’t enjoy.

Thanks Simone, whilst I have always enjoyed a nice garden, I’ve never had one, so this is all still completely new to me. If I was to do this again I would certainly ask more garden related questions!

Unfortunately getting someone in just isn’t an option for me right now, for now I’ll just appreciate that I’ve effectively just got myself an at home gym now with all the manual labour, I’m fit and strong and will just have to take it all a step at a time!

So for now I’m starting with pulling up the paving slabs, pulling out roots as deep as I can, from what I’ve read I’ll just have to keep pulling them as they grow and apparently they like bad soil so hopefully improving the soil once I pull up the slabs will help.

And in the mean time if everyone could just put in a kind word with Gerda (the Norse goddess of gardens) on my behalf it would be much appreciated! :spinning:

I’m also a DIY fan, and did our garden by digging up it over weeks. Just keep going and stay strong in the hard moments.
One member in the GW forum had bought a house and found out that the gardenwas entirly with thick ivy roots. He started to remove it, but didn’t write back if he finished.
        Keep us updated, please :)
