Can someone please help me to identify this shrub/tree in my garden. It's leaves are symmetrical but the spines stiffen as they age. There are five spines on each leaf; two at the base, two half way and one at the tip.The mature leaf is about 2-3 cms from tip to base.
At present it is about six feet in height and has put on about two feet in six years (it was here when I came to the garden but had been a bit overwhelmed by hawthorn bush - now removed), though that said, it has received some manure this year as it is adjacent
    to other plantings.
