    Hi All

    hope you’re well.

I purchased some Hollyhocks but I don’t think they’ll flower this year. Can anyone tell me Judging by the size of the plants if they’ll flower this year or next year , similar to foxgloves and lupins ?

they’re about 3 cm high at the moment. I’ve attached a photo.

    thanks 785D50FC-A2BD-47B3-B7E5-BAB81A2DC107.jpeg

I'd say you are right - they are bi-annuals, so the first year they get themselves going and then they flower the second year. I absolutely adore hollyhocks, but sadly haven't grown any for a few years. Best of luck with them and please post back with photos when they are in full bloom?

@Shaneoak I grew hollyhocks last year from seed and planted out the few successes. One got huge, flowered and I cut it down. This year the "trunk" of the old plant is developing leaves. So I am at a loss as to what exactly this is. Now, my foxglove is a biennial and it didn't flower the first year and has come back and looking as to creating buds.

So hollyhock -maybe if they're freaks, they flower in August like my February sown seeds did last year. I started a couple of new ones this year so I guess I'll wait and see.

      Mystery time :)

@Shaneoak, Hollyhock in the UK are usually treated as short lived perennial plants
May live for two three or more years

In Spring last year I bought plug plants just like yours
A couple of mine flowered, you may be lucky; especially if we have a warm summer
I'm hoping to see flowers this year on a few more

Thanks. Yeh I absolutely love them too , but struggle to grow or maintain them . If I was wealthy I’d buy say 30 double flowered crimson and maroon all potted and ready to bloom same year ! I hardly ever see them lol n garden centres to be honest . I’ve seen Lupins read to bloom at 25 pounds a pot this year!!!! Not sure if that’s due to brexit/ covid . Yes, I’ll post them sure

They've been getting increasingly expensive for years. I love them, but for some reason Lupins just keel over and die in my garden.
