If you get Horse Tail in your garden you have a plant for life - whether you like it or not :rolleyespink:. It grows pretty fast and should be pulled out from the base every couple of weeks (it normally goes down too deep to be dug out). This will prevent the spores from setting and spreading. Mare's Tail is (technically) a similar looking variety that grows in water.

This is one beast that I ALWAYS throw in the Rubbish bin for Landfill.

I may be wrong but I believe that, because any small bits you leave - or drop - will grow again, it is unwise to either compost or send off in the Garden Bin for recycling as Council Compost.

It may come back in Compost to start again - tell me if I'm wrong!

The main place I have it in my garden is under the greenhouse. I have membrane fitted and paving flags over the floor.
The Horses tail has found a route and comes up regularly inside. On the outside it is there but less prolific, because I can access the root further down.
I've tried weed killer which works reasonably well, but it comes back the following year just as bad as before.

Hey zig they were pretty cool and I was reading how 100 millions of years ago they used to be similer types 30 metres tall way before trees like you say. I thought it was a horsetail untill I googled it and it said there was a similar type that grew in water (which this was but very very shallow not even a puddle like a drying up stream.
Hi shiney, would love something like that in my garden behind a load of ferns!! :D
Hi gc3, that's quite amazing that it can come back like that every year from under membrane and concrete, makes me like it even more :D but I can imagine that would be annoying after a while lol

          Hmmm slipknot? :heehee:

I'm thinking of creating mini pools with pots and surrounding them with ferns and things and that plant would suit my idea very well [IMG]
