How do I care for a young apple tree?

Should work if you can reasonably match the diameter of your scion to the unwanted graft removed - where a graft has failed, I've successfully re-done a failed graft in the second year with a carefully chosen scion of the correct size.

But by collecting my rootstock on a Wednesday I get them 10% cheaper than this by using my discount card and avoid P&P charges, plus I also intend to bury some excess rootstocks and start producing my own for free.

 

Never really thought about them also being a Bricks & Mortar outfit.

How does one get a discount card?

 

'Luckily' I'm a member of one of those local organisations so would benefit from a reduced cost Discount Card from July next year, although I won my existing Discount Card in a competition which didn't actually give me any benefit as Mrs Scrungee already had one. But as I'd have to spend over £50 p.a. there just to break even on buying stuff on Wednesdays, I don't think I'll be bothering with one or shopping there any more. I used to get that discount for simply being a member of a local gardening society without having to pay for a card.

I'd better get all the bare rooted fruit trees I need for some time this Autumn/Winter whilst I can still get 10% off with my existing card.

I've spent many hundreds with them this year - a lot of their stuff is better priced than I can find elsewhere on the net. Although dunno if I will need to buy bulk from them again as I think I've got over some of the projects that needed that many plants!

My next project (some planting in a new terrace next to the house) would benefit from some "instant" plants, and I'm tempted to hire a suitable vehicle and go over to Holland to get them. Couldn't believe the price of some instant-impact plants when we visited nurseries in Holland in the summer.

 

I'm growing a fruiting cherry which seeded itself from my neighbour's tree. I don't really give a stuff whether it produces fruit or not (would be left for the birds in any case). I like trees - they don't particularly have to yield anything, so fully understand where you are coming from

 

and cherry trees in my opinion the most beautiful trees around.
