    Hi

As part of my garden overhaul I've now got onto the honeysuckle but I'm not sure the best way to go about things.

You can see the setting on the first two photos below. It's an L-shape with a stretch of new fencing then a solid bit of trellis with a possible extension via an arch onto the garage wall. There are 3 honeysuckle locations (also shown below). Firstly a younger bit at the extreme left of the fence, then a big old bit at the L, and then another oldish bit just next to the arch.

The 2 older bits hadn't been looked after in years and had just become thicker and higher with loads of dead wood underneath and what blossom there was ended up 10 foot up. So I hacked it right back a month or two back after flowering. But I'm not sure about the best way forward.

If I do a trellis along the fence it seems a waste of the nice fence plus its quite a long stretch. If I put up wire (is wire the right material?) then I've only got the couple of fence posts to fix it to, which seem far apart, otherwise its got to fix on the thin planks and I'm not sure I could do that without ruining them. And how many rows of wire, and is a lattice better, etc? So I'm just not sure what I'm aiming for and hence how to start.

    Any advice greatly welcome!

    thanks
    Gavin.

I trained mine on the deck railing using that green garden ribbon and assisted the limbs to weave around the railings. Wanted it in that position because this one attracks Humming birds. Nice to sit on the deck and see them in the flowers.

How about using old rope fastened between the fence posts, for the honeysuckle to ramble along. I saw the technique on telly a few years ago, and it looked excellent.

I'd use wire but attach it diagonally top to bottom. You have three sturdy horizontals to screw your eyes into so just arrange it so your wire is about 40-50 degrees from vertical. you shouldn't have any trouble then training the honeysuckle in any direction.
