I am often puzzled by modern life.

Down here in Cornwall estate agents and solicitors close for a fortnight over Christmas.

 

I wonder if I can "work" from home here ???

 

We have neighbours who are employed by the Home Office. Since Covid, their jobs have been perfect examples of nominative determinism.

 

Can't remember the company now but did hear about some work from home people have up sticks and moved to Spain, it appears that they never have to go to an office so can really work from anywhere in the world as long as they have an Internet connection.

 

I understand there are lots of folk here who do that.

 

Always been a hands on person myself.
Any ideas what these people actually do that means just an Internet connection and no physical contact with anyone manages to pass as a job.
Call centre
Maybe?
Or just updating bank accounts?

 

Some working from home is utterly ridiculous. Apparently one of the systems recovery team needed by Heathrow after the electrical fire was working from home, and was on-call, - in Cornwall.
Personal feeling is, the sooner they get everybody back to working from the office, assuming that was the job prior to Covid, the better.

 

One guy (a Canadian) we met was a Commodities or Currency Broker and had five people working for him. Must have done well as last thing we heard he had bought a 12 bedroom hotel by the sea to renovate!

 

Sounds dodgy .

 

My local council dug a road up in town and found some Tram Rails, they resurfaced the road in February, now they are digging up the rails in May
and will resurface the road yet again.

 

Modern advertising….

While I remember adverts from the fifties and sixties with some affection ( “A million housewives every day, pick up a tin of beans and say…” ) modern adverts just get me gnashing my teeth with irritation.

Here is Ocado, doing its best to get me to shop online with it. Just what in the name of all things holy are these two suggesting I buy? And what is in it that will make me lose control of my bladder through laughing so much?
