The fish counters here are to die for but you need deep pockets! I wait for the special offers, stock up on tuna, swordfish, monkfish, halibut and smoked haddock as they come along, then freeze them. All this business about not re-freezing is so much codswallop () if the fish is properly cooked before eating it.
Our glorious President's latest advice to us lesser mortals is to replace meat and fish (horrendously expensive) with pulses, at least three times a week. Bet he doesn't eat *****g chick peas and haricots blancs as a substitute for fillet steak and king prawns! Grrrrr...definite shades of Marie Antoinette and her famous 'let them eat cake'! It'll all end in tears....:loll:

Our local Tesco had loads of frozen bags of mixed beans with chick peas reduced to clear at 10p a bag and we filled every gap in our freezers with them. We'd cook some from the freezers, put those in the fridge and immediately fill the gaps with more 10p bags.

They were nice at first, but we've gone off them a few times and left it several weeks before starting on tbem again.

Still, they make a nice change from their reduced to clear 10p fishless fishcakes.

As our local Tesco store acted as a clearance point for loads of frozen 'meatless', Quorn vegetarian (but not latest vegan versions), gluten free, dairy free, etc. products, mainly being sold off at 10p, but a few for 20p, we absolutely stuffed our 5 freezers, even removing the cardboard packaging so we could get more in, and we'd check how much space we had before going shopping and buy that many replacements plus what we were having for lunch.

Most Quorn products are good, and we cleared everything the had a 10p/pack. It was only their 'chicken style' burgers that were dissapointing, but at 2.5p each we didn't complain.

Teso meatless burgers a bit tasteless, but at 2.5p per burger in a bun with some cheese, onion, fried egg from our hens and some of our own salad provided loads of very very cheap meals.

The fishless fishcakes were very dissapointing, but at 2.5p each were a cheap addition to a fried breakfast.

Mrs Scrungee loved the 6x packs of gluten free frozen jam doughnuts for 10p/pack. N.B. Gluten free bread is foul.

The 10p packs of gluten and dairy free 'cornetto' style icecreams were lovely.

The 20p packs of 2x Tesco cheesy vegetarian pies were O.K.

I think there was other stuff in small quantities that I've forgotten, but i provided a great opportunity to try lots of 'free from' stuff very cheaply and stay within our £1 per day per person food budget. Very often there's printable coupons to get dairy free 'milk' for free and we'll get as many free cartons as possible ad I don't mind it on breakfast cereal.

But I'd never pay full price for something like soya tuna which I know was bound to be a huge disappointment.

Don't you ever ask yourself, Scrunge, what is being used to replace all the natural ingredients in these 'non' products? Personally, I'd rather try to source properly produced traditional food but just eat less when it's expensive. Chacun sa religion...:)

Just remember that if you're overweight you can help the planet by not dieting. :dbgrtmb: Losing weight produces a lot of carbon dioxide so you mustn't do it. :nonofinger:

Nah, you can't do dying either - if you get buried, you decompose and release methane and if they cremate you that is increasing your carbon footprint massively. Indeed, it is a matter of time until dying is banned unless you have bought sufficient carbon credits to offset the carbon caused by your death.

There are alternatives to cremation or burial. You can be dunked in liquid nitrogen, then crushed and scattered as per ashes. Or you can be heated up in strong caustic soda, neutralised and flushed down the drain to the local sewage works, any clean bones left can be crushed and scattered.
