    Hi,
my Iceberg is growing over the obelisk and I'm not sure how to train the bits that are now over the top.

Should I trim the top growth, train the stems to go back down, train them to start a downward spiral or something else?

I'm a rose newbie, so have optimistically tied most stems as horizontally as possible and let some grow up to gain height. The plant is on its second summer and has flowered well. The obelisk is 1.8m tall.

That's a strong looking frame. I'd be inclined to remove the top shoot. Then train the rest upwards and also extending across the gaps. If as it looks, the frame is large enough, perhaps leave one quarter clear and as Iceberg is a thornless rose, perhaps an attractive little bower might fit in with your garden design. As time passes, keep an eye on the development of thicker older wood and keep this reduced. Iceberg can race away so keep watch. Very nice rose though whatever it's growing form.

Good afternoon @Selleri my friend personally I would remove the top cane now that it has reached the top of the obelisk and keep it at this height which in turn would enable the Rose to thicken up below this height,if you require the top to grow longer you can always let it grow some more later on if required;):blue thumb:

One of the things you have to decided when training climbing roses is whether or not you want all the flowers at the top after the plant has been there a year or two. If not, and you want some flowers along the sides, it would help to train some of the stems over the top and down the other side. Forcing stems downwards tends to encourage climbing roses to flower closer to the ground.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

Thanks everyone, I'll cut this shoot and try bending down the next one that is about to grow too tall. Then we'll see what works best for this particular plant. :)

I'm a bit rose shy as there seems to be just one correct thing to do and everything else is doomed, but apparently roses are in real life not that picky. My Icebergs are a joy, regardless if they are pruned or trained to perfection :)

But this forum is great to get the basics right with a new plant type, I can't thank enough everyone sharing their wisdom and stories over the years.

I may be suggestible to try adventurous plantings but even I wouldn't grow lettuce on an obelisk... or,hang on... it might be fun... @ThePlantAssassin , will you please stop giving people ideas?!

One year on, my Iceberg is getting out of hands

Can you lovely, knowledgeable folks please advise how I should train the top growth to make the plant look decent?

              iceberg1.jpg

The stems are strong and still quite bendy so theoretically I could bend them downwards but I'm not sure how that would look.

There's some short Cosmos growing to hide the bare bottom growth ("bare bottom growth"?) so that's fine, it's just the top growth that is poking the clouds.

I ordered the rose online and it arrived promptly into my office, carefully labelled as Climbing Iceberg but failing to have my name on the parcel. This caused some head scratching in the mailroom as our office is quite big and the guys receive(d) dozens of parcels every day.

Judging by the plant name they gave me a call to tell that there is something that has to do with climate change so they thought it might be for me :heehee:
