ID this caterpillar please -- freind or foe?

    hallo, saw this critter today -- it seems to have no colour markings, its just brown all over -- i will keep him/her in a jar but what is he/she and what leaf shall i fedd him/her?

    am sure someone will know -- thanks, karaman

    I'm no expert on caterpillars, but it could be one of the hawkmoths or something similar. I'm sure someone will give you an exact ID though.
    NatureSpot is a useful site for getting an ID too, for all sorts of things. :smile:

      Looks like one of the large family of moth caterpillars known as cutworms that feed on low growing plants. They aren't usually a problem in gardens but it can be quite hard to identify to species. Very rarely do you get densities of them high enough to do major damage.

      All larger moths are declining at a frightening rate and are food for birds, hedgehogs and other insects, so its always welcome to see them :)
