James Cagney started his career as a dancer and comedian and got his first Academy Award for his part in 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' in which he did quite a bit of dancing.

In the earlier days of movies most of the stars were able, and needed, to dance.
This is a little combination that someone made. The older ones on GC may recognise a number of them :)

One of the original and best tap dancers was Bill 'BoJangles' Robinson. He taught a lot of the others and he made over thirty films. Unfortunately, he ended up destitute and an alcoholic. The well known song 'Mr BoJangles' was about him and has been performed by over 100 famous singers. Most of the older well known singers have sung it but also some more modern singers like Robbie Williams. It's a lovely but sad song.

Mr Bojangles is on my top 10 list of all time favourite songs :blue thumb: although it does make me well up when it gets to the bit about his dog dying.

I love this Robbie Williams video of it, mainly because of the dancer :wub2:

Yes, Merle, that was a good performance by him. That was the live Royal Albert Hall performance that he did. When he gave the intro to the song he spoke about Mr BoJangles and mentioned that he was a drunkard and roustabout - but that he was a brilliant dancer.

Jerry Jeff Walker wrote the song and insists that he didn't write it about Bill 'BoJangles' Robinson but about a story told to him by a white man, who was a dancer) he met in a New Orleans jail. Of course, the man could have been telling Bill's story although he related as his own.

A friend of ours was a dancer and whenever she practiced at home her kitten used to dance with her. So she named it Mr BoJangles :) :cat-kittyandsmiley:
