:D ... my grandfather should have bought gold or silver coins instead ... with that money in the 1960's he could have bought another farm or two

A number of banks allow you to make withdrawals at the post office, with no charge. We have that facility, which comes in handy as we can get cash at the small post office in the village. We can also pay in cash and cheques there with no cost. :dbgrtmb:

I dislike the way the banks have marketed themselves in recent years. The cuddly 'I'll be there/the journey' ads have made the gullible think that the banks are in some way rather nice little charities, dedicated to doing good works. I don't remember my parents ever viewing banks as anything other than a necessary evil. The bank manager wasn't your mate; he was someone you kept clear of as much as possible. Going in for a 'little talk' about the state of your account was a humiliating experience - something you definitely didn't want your neighbours to know about. Then the banks rebranded debt as 'credit' and it was suddenly OK to have lots of it. 'Credit' made the banking system mega-rich; Mrs Blogg's little current account, which never had much in it but never went into the red either, certainly wasn't going to do the trick.

I've recently had the credit limit on my card drastically reduced without warning. My crime? I pay off the outstanding amount each month. Therefore - although no one has actually said this to me in so many words - I'm not much of a customer because I'm not servicing a vast debt.

That's like saying that because the "person" who takes money from me and you every week decides to buy buy a Bank or two with it really does actually believes the money is still yours and mine.:heehee: I'm no more part owner of those Banks than a member of a lost tribe in South America.:D

Urgently check this info in Greece itself

I had a small amount of Irish Punds. and given the same story as you
However in IRELAND itself you can take them into a bank, and after a few weeks changed

It is only OUTWITH the county that they can not be accepted

steve gave me a link to money saving expert forum ... I registered there and posted a thread .... was given a link to the greek bank in athens ... phoned them, but the guy said I need to phone tommorow as it was late and no-one was there (never really understood what he said as he spoke in broken english)

also phoned the greek bank in London, and they said I should phone or contact the bank in Greece ... (nightmare .... going around in circles)

then, I got the contact link for the bank in Greece, and have emailed them ... so will wait and see what happens tommorow or during the week

I don't see how a bank can get out of paying up.

The whole point of paper money is that it is backed up by the banks gold reserves.

People trust the bit of paper, not for its fancy design, but for the "Promise" written on it.

                It says (in the uk)

It doesn't say I promise to pay the bearer on demand until I decide this bit of paper is worthless, oh by the way, i've still got your gold but you can't have it because I said so.
